We are recruiting....

Interiors UK 2014

We recently exhibited at Interiors UK, held at the NEC in Birmingham from 19th to 22nd January. There was a new section at the show this year specifically showcasing British bespoke furniture companies. This section was very well received by interior designers and others visiting the exhibition.

The mirror, bench, cabinet and floor on our exhibition stand (see picture) were all manufactured to show some of our capabilities as bespoke furniture and interiors manufacturers, and proved popular with visitors to the show!

The mirror was a replica of one made for a client with a mahogany frame, antiqued mirror and lacquered fretwork, and was 1900mm x 1200mm. This would retail for approximately £2,350 + VAT though we do offer trade prices on a project by project basis. The size, wood, colour, fretwork pattern and mirror can all be customised to a client's requirements.

The bench was a replica of one made for a client in spalted beech with a waxed finish and metal underframe, and was 1000mm x 400mm x 450mm (high). This would retail for approximately £800 + VAT though we do offer trade prices on a project by project basis. The size, wood and finish can all be customised to a client's requirements.

The cabinet was a replica of one made for a client which also sat in front of the mirror above. Veneered in mahogany with a shelf inside and touch latch fittings, and was 960mm x 400mm x 870mm (high). This would retail for approximately £800 + VAT though we do offer trade prices on a project by project basis. The size, wood, finish and shelves can all be customised to a client's requirements.

If you have any projects you feel we may be able to assist you with, we would be more than happy to provide a quote. Please contact us on 01938 55 88 52 or

New Pieces for London Client

These bedside tables and bedroom console were recently delivered to a new apartment development in London.  In macassar ebony veneer, with metal under frames, the current trend of wood and metal combined seems to continue....

'Heart of the Home' kitchen complete.  Hot Lobster has completed the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke elm and grey kitchen, which has a fresh and funky feel, but incorporates some traditional elements and skillful details.  The kitchen was designed by Paul, using the Hot Lobster client kitchen questionnaire as the core design brief. The questionnaire establishes not only what the client wants the end product to look like, but also concentrates heavily on how the family intend to use the space, and the practical elements which are most important to them.

"When designing a kitchen, it's critical to think about the functionality of the space, as much as how the finished product will look" notes Paul.  "The kitchen is one of the most functional spaces in a house, and it's vital that the client is completely satisfied with how the elements of the space work together in the long term, not just how it looks on the day the last handle is fixed in place".

The large island provides a multitude of functionality, including storage, preparation and cooking space, and gives the kitchen good circulation.  The breakfast bar provides practical additional eating space (handy to watch over two young children while preparing dinner for the adults!) whilst its design provides a visual separation between the cooking and eating areas.

On The Recruitment Trail...

Finding qualified furniture makers in the UK seems to be a common problem across the furniture manufacturing industry right now.  Hit hard by the decline in the UK's furniture manufacturing base over recent years, the number of people working in the industry, and training to work in the industry seems to have been on the slide.   We've been looking for a qualified furniture maker for a little while now, but the traditional recruitment methods don't seem to be proving overly fruitful.

We've also been working with Bucks New University in High Wycombe for the past few weeks, to try and engage with graduating furniture design and craft students.  We're advertising our vacancy on their jobs website, notice boards and e-bulletins, in the hope that one of their graduates would just love to head to a beautiful part of Wales and be given the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of furniture design and manufacture, along with being part of an exciting company!   Bucks New University is one of the few UK Universities offering a degree in furniture design and craft, and has a special connection for Paul as it's where he learnt his craft (some years ago now!).  Yesterday, we headed to the College to see the students' end of year exhibition.  There was some good stuff on display, but hardly any students to be found...!!  The small number of students we did speak to had no idea about the job vacancy and gave a vague indication that they might look out for it!  So much for students being desperate to find work. The long six hour round trip to the College may not have been instantly successful on the employment front, but it did give us some hope that there is still talent coming through the UK system on the furniture front....
